VISALIA – City College of San Francisco staged a huge late-game comeback to stun host College of the Sequoias in an amazing 24-21 victory on Saturday at Sequoias Stadium.
The Rams trailed 21-3 at the 12:49 mark in the fourth quarter after COS connected on a long 48-yard touchdown reception.
While things looked bleak at that point for the Rams, the CCSF offense never quit. It took just three plays after the ensuing kickoff for quarterback Darius Clark-James to close out the Rams' scoring drive with a 38-yard touchdown strike to Zakarri Black.
Now down 21-10, the Rams' defense came up with the biggest play of the contest that likely put momentum clearly on CCSF's side.
The Giants' next drive was stalled by a sack and a personal foul that led to a punt attempt from the COS 32-yard line. CCSF's Brian Dominguez broke through to block the punt that was scooped up by Mike Turner at the 28-yard line and returned for a touchdown.
The Rams now trailed by just four points, 21-17, with plenty of time left on the clock (9:05).
CCSF held tough on COS' next two drives and took advantage of a flurry of penalties called on the Giants that forced punts.
The Rams got the ball back one final time with 4:40 remaining in the contest. Clark-James led CCSF on a grueling 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Nash that catapulted the Rams out in front for good with just eight seconds left to play.
Sequoias connected on a 30-yard pass in their final attempt of the game but the Rams' defense stopped them well short at the CCSF 45 -yard line to secure the victory and set off the huge celebration.
Clark-James threw for 211 yards and 2 touchdowns on 14 of 31 passing with an interception. He also ran 6 times for 32 yards.
Isaiah Kesihk led CCSF receivers with 3 catches for 63 yards. Black hauled in 2 receptions for 55 yards and a TD while Nash had a pair of catches for 31 yards and a touchdown.
On defense, Sonny Vitale (33) led with 9 tackles. He also broke up a pass and was credited with a quarterback hurry. Aloisa Maluia had 8 tackles with a sack and Joey Lealao was in on a sack with 3 tackles.
CCSF, now 1-1, is back in action next Saturday (Sep. 13) when the Rams travel to Butte College for a 1 p.m. non-league game.
